Questions and answers about China

Once you travel to China, you are immersed in a completely new cultural world. The country's history can be traced back thousands of years. Special cultural assets are, for example, the Chinese script, the martial art Kung Fu or the Chinese holidays. Superstitions and rituals can also be found in Chinese culture. The Chinese always want to ensure harmonious coexistence by, for example, avoiding conflict talks, laughing in perhaps inappropriate situations and not criticising other people. This could cause you to "lose face", as they say in China. It also means that you cannot meet requirements.

Music and dance, as well as traditional martial arts, are often practised in public places, where everyone can join in or just watch. In general, Chinese people do a lot with others in their free time, whether they know the people or not. You will often see them singing karaoke together, doing aerobics or chatting in a tea house. Meals together are also often celebrated in a big way. Of course, there are also many interesting sights in China, such as one of the modern wonders of the world: the Great Wall of China, which stretches over 21,000 km across the whole of China. You can also visit many palaces or temples, such as the Forbidden City or the Summer Palace.

"Chinese eat everything that has four legs, except tables" is a Chinese proverb. You probably know that the cuisine in China can be very unusual. But you will find a number of delicacies alongside strange specialities. Standard dishes are usually rice or noodles with various meats, such as Peking duck or chicken with different sauces. Dumplings such as spring rolls, jiaozi or xiaolongbao are also very popular. You will probably also have to get used to the Chinese table manners. When you are in a restaurant with your friends, you usually order different main courses, which are then shared and eaten with chopsticks. But don't empty a bowl, because that seems rude to the Chinese. On the contrary, it would be rude to slurp or slurp at the table - for the Chinese, it shows that you like the food and is even expected.

China is almost as big as the whole of Europe, but almost twice as many people live there. That is why people often live in a confined space. The Chinese New Year does not take place on 1 January, as it does here, but alternates every year on a calendar day with a new moon between 21 January and 21 February. The New Year is one of the most important holidays. A good tip: when you are travelling in China, you should always have a dictionary with you, because many Chinese understand little or no English. If you miss a Chinese word, communication will be difficult. And it's best to always carry a piece of paper with your address in Chinese so that you can always get back home.
