Common tourist mistakes
It is important to familiarize yourself with local traffic as the Irish drive on the left side of the road and have the steering wheel on the right. Not only does this mean you have to drive on the left, but you also have to turn clockwise in the roundabout, avoid traffic islands on the left, and overtake on the right-hand highway, while the left-hand lane is the slower of the two is.
Do not associate the Irish and the British. As you have already read in the Irish History and Culture section, the southern part of the country has become very distant from the British, so try to keep them all separate, even if the cultures are similar. At the same time, in Northern Ireland you should not make the mistake of thinking that you belong to the Republic of Ireland.
Hints and tips
If you do not know exactly how much tip you should include, here is a brief overview: as a general rule, you tip with taxi drivers and service stations, in pubs and in restaurants you give about 10 percent. If you are in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, be sure to wear green. It may sound a bit strange to foreigners that the Irish have a strong connection to fairies and goblins, but you should not joke about it. Respect the culture, mythology and traditions of the locals.
